There’s a lot to love about an Australian August – most importantly, it means we’re just about done with winter and it’s time to get ready for some glorious Spring weather! And in order to get your garden ready for the new season, there are some tasks you can tackle in August to ensure it’s blooming come September.
Here are five gardening tasks to get on top of this August:
- Give your lawn a final mow for the winter season, and then feed it with some rich fertiliser to help it green up quickly come Spring. This will help ensure any dead grass is removed and you’ll have a great, tidy starting point when the new season arrives. Because your grass will start growing more quickly in the Spring, August is the perfect time to give your lawn mower some TLC to have it ready and in top working order. Give it a thorough clean, oil any moving parts and sharpen the blades yourself, or book it in with us for a service. - If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to start planting your spring bulbs – daffodils, tulips and jonquils are all perfect for an Australian August planting. They’re a great way to add some bright, early colour to your garden come Springtime.
- August is also a good time of year to start thinking about mulching and preparing your soil for spring planting. This involves spreading a layer of organic material – like bark chips, compost or some well-rotted manure – around the base of your plants. Mulching helps retain moisture in the soil, suppresses weed growth and can even help insulate your plants from extreme temperatures
- In August, it makes perfect sense to start planning any new garden beds or landscaping projects you might want to tackle come Spring. By getting a head start on the design process now and gathering the materials you’re going to need, you’ll be able to hit the ground running when the weather warms up and it’s finally time to get outside and get your hands dirty!
- Finally, it’s the perfect month to get rid of any dead or dying plants from your garden beds – they’ll just take up valuable space that new plants could be using come Spring. Compost them if possible.
