7 Common Lawn Mowing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Are you a fan of mowing the lawn? While some people are, many find lawn mowing to be a chore, but, it can actually be enjoyable if you know how to do it properly and have the right equipment. There are many common yet easily made mistakes that people make when mowing their lawn, and in this blog post, we’ll discuss seven of them and give you tips to avoid making them.

Common mistake #1 – Not trimming the edges of the lawn before mowing

If you don’t trim the edges of your lawn before mowing, you risk having your lawn looking messy and unkempt. Using a lawn mower alone will not give you a clean, straight line along the edge of your lawn nor will you be able to get into any fiddly nooks or crannies. For a neatly manicured lawn, make sure to use a trimmer before mowing to ensure a  clean cut.

Common mistake #2  – Mowing the lawn when it’s wet

Mowing your lawn when it’s wet can cause a number of problems, such as leaving tire marks on the lawn, the clumping of grass, and promoting fungi growth. If you must mow while the lawn is wet, be sure to use a lawn mower that is designed for wet conditions.

Common mistake # 3 – Not mowing often enough

If you don’t mow your lawn often enough, neglected grass will become long and very difficult to cut. Additionally, long grass is more likely to harbour pests and diseases. For most lawns, you should aim to mow weekly during the warmer months.

Common mistake # 4 – Mowing too short

While it may seem like mowing your lawn shorter will save you time in the long run, it’s actually one of the worst things you can do for your lawn. When you mow too short, you risk damaging the lawn by scalping it, which can lead to problems such as lawn disease.

Common mistake # 5 – Not using a sharp mower blade

If you’re not using a sharp mower blade, you could be damaging your lawn. A dull blade, not only makes your mowing effort inefficient, it will tear the grass rather than cut it cleanly, which can damage the lawn. Be sure to use a well-maintained blade and/or replace the blades when necessary to avoid this issue.

Common mistake #6 – Mowing in the same direction every time

While it may seem like mowing in the same direction every time would be more efficient, it’s actually not good for your lawn. Mowing in the same direction all the time can cause lawn compaction, which can lead to several problems such as waterlogging and decreased drainage. To avoid this, be sure to change up your mowing pattern every so often.

Common mistake #7 – Not cleaning the lawn mower after each use

If you don’t clean your lawn mower after each use, you risk damaging the machine and/or spreading lawn diseases. Be sure to clean the lawn mower blade, undercarriage, and engine compartment after each use to prevent any problems.
