How Do You Sharpen A Dull Chainsaw Chain?

Chainsaw Chain

Chainsaw chain can become dull after frequent use. A dull chainsaw is dangerous to use. This is because the equipment will become more prone to kickback.

In this article, we’ll share with you the dos and don’ts of sharpening a chainsaw and several tips on how to keep your equipment in tip-top shape.

How Do You Sharpen A Dull Chainsaw Chain? | The Mower Place

Whether you’re a timber worker or a homeowner interested in cutting firewood from fallen trees or overgrown shrubbery, know that it is vital to maintain your chainsaw. With frequent use, the dozens of cutter teeth would become dull.

Unsharpened chainsaws have reduced effectiveness and performance. This would require users to exert more physical effort. A dull chainsaw chain also makes the equipment dangerous to use. This is because the saw will become more prone to kickback.

Recognising A Dull Chainsaw

There are several signs you need to take note of while working with your chainsaw. If you notice any of the signs, it may mean it’s time to sharpen or replace the saw chain. Take a look at our checklist below.

  1. The chainsaw chain does not pull itself into the wood.
  2. You have to apply pressure to force it through the wood.
  3. The chainsaw produces fine sawdust when cross-cutting.
  4. The saw produces smoke
  5. The chainsaw does not make even cuts.

Dos and Don’ts

Regular sharpening using filing will keep your chainsaw running in tip-top shape. However, there are a couple of things that you should remember before attempting the task.

Do: Familiarise yourself with the saw chain

Your chainsaw comes with an owner’s manual where manufacturers typically include a detailed diagram of the parts of your saw chain. In the manual, you’ll see many cutters, which are the focus of the sharpening process.

Don’t: Wait for signs of fine sawdust.

Sharpening your chainsaw every second or third time you refill the fuel would reduce the chances of having a dull saw chain.

Do: Use the correct file diameter

Generally, round files are used to sharpen chainsaws. The standard diameter ranges between 4mm to 6mm. Experts recommend checking your owner’s manual to find the optimal file diameter.

Don’t: Push the file

When using a round file, you should always sharpen away from yourself. Do not pull the file before pushing it. Instead, lift the file up to return to the starting position and push it again. Use the same number of file strokes and the same pressure to file each cutter.

Sharpening Your Chainsaw

Here are some of the steps that every expert follows to sharpen a chainsaw chain:

  • Wear protective gloves.
  • Secure the guide bar in a vice. This keeps the saw from moving and injuring you while you are trying to sharpen the saw chain. You can use a workbench or a stump vice to do this.
  • If you are working with a battery-powered or a corded chainsaw, make sure that the battery or the cord is not plugged in before sharpening. This would prevent the equipment from accidentally starting while you’re working.
  • Release the chain brake to allow the chain to move freely.
  • Use a soft brush to remove any dust off the chain.
  • Mark your saw chain’s first tooth with a black marker.
